Project Narrative

Maleväljak reimagines Peetri Plaza as a dynamic and multifunctional public space inspired by the strategic order of a chessboard. The grid-based design establishes a clear organizational framework that intuitively guides movement while defining flexible spatial modules. These alternating squares support everyday circulation yet seamlessly transform into stages, seating zones, exhibition platforms, and gathering spaces for festivals, performances, and community events.

Grounded in shared-space principles, the design encourages the harmonious coexistence of pedestrians and low-speed vehicles. Rather than relying on strict separation, circulation is integrated thoughtfully to prioritize safety, accessibility, and human interaction. Crosswalks and pathways are embedded within the grid, ensuring inclusive navigation for all users while maintaining efficient traffic flow.

Sustainability is central to the concept. Alternating green squares introduce urban landscaping that softens the plaza’s character, improves air quality, supports biodiversity, and increases resilience to heat and seasonal changes. Durable, standardized materials enhance longevity and reduce maintenance demands, balancing financial responsibility with long-term performance. Efficient land use maximizes functionality while minimizing wasted space.

By combining adaptability, environmental integration, and cultural sensitivity, Maleväljak becomes more than a redesigned plaza—it evolves into a resilient civic platform. The project strengthens Narva’s identity, connects past and present, and provides a flexible urban space capable of supporting both daily life and large-scale cultural gatherings for years to come.
