Project Narrative

Situated in the heart of Busan, the DB Insurance Headquarters tower stands as a built expression of the company’s identity and principles. The design seeks a distinctive yet enduring architectural presence—one that looks confidently toward Busan’s future while maintaining the practical efficiency essential to success in the city’s competitive office market.

The building is envisioned as a singular, solid form symbolizing strength and longevity. Its defining gesture is a sequence of carved corners that soften the mass and anchor the tower to its specific urban context. In response to local zoning requirements for generous green space, these sculpted voids become indoor-outdoor garden terraces located at the lower, middle, and upper portions of the tower. Each is strategically oriented—west toward the mountains and east toward the city. The most prominent corner opening faces south toward Seomyeon Plaza and occurs at the sectional transition between “holding office” floors and “for-sale” office levels. Crowning the tower, a rooftop garden provides a distinctive silhouette while offering expansive southern views toward the harbor.

The façade is conceived as a contemporary interpretation of a “Culture Net.” A bronze-toned metal lattice wraps the building, creating a textured surface that visually breaks down the tower’s scale and harmonizes it with the surrounding low-rise structures and their varied materials. Integrated diagonal elements—formed by perforated bronze panels—serve as external sun-shading devices, filtering daylight into the office interiors while preserving outward views. These diagonals collectively evoke the image of a net, referencing Busan’s maritime and fishing heritage. The metaphor reinforces themes of protection and security—values closely aligned with the mission of an insurance company.
